Pokemon Sword & Shield: Big Expectation Could Destroy Us

The announcement has been officially made. During the last Nintendo Direct, we have been introduced to one of the most anticipated games that are coming this year; Pokemon Sword and Shield.

It raised a few meh moments for me, but overall, I am hype for this game which will release in late 2019.

Not long after the announcement, a lot of reaction I can see coming from Pokemon die-hard fans. What I can observe is some of them happy with it but others hate it. Some of them even really hate the name!

I will try to point out my view regarding Pokemon Sword and Shield without being bias to anyone.

Too Much Expectation?

First, let me put us in these two different situations;

Situation A;

The year is 2017 when Nintendo announced they will release Nintendo Switch. The main games to launch together with this console is Pokemon Sword & Shield. The games to release after it is Mario Odyssey, Splatoon 2 and Zelda Breath of the Wild.

Situation B;

The year is 2017 when Nintendo announced they will release Nintendo Switch. The main games to launch together with this console is Mario Odyssey, Splatoon 2 and Zelda Breath of the Wild. The games that to release after it is Pokemon Sword & Shield.

Situation A is the alternate dimension while Situation B is our reality. Imagine somehow, we are in the alternate dimension (Situation A), I can guarantee the reaction we will get towards Pokemon Sword and Shield definitely it is the best game that Nintendo has so far and how good it will be. No doubt about it.

While in the current reality we are facing now is, we are already being feed by how good Mario Odyssey has become. How drastic the transformation for Zelda Breath of the Wild is. And also, how Splatoon 2 has evolved from their previous game. Don’t let me start on how good their graphic, gameplay and their games mechanic these three games have turned into. I could talk for days about how jaw-dropping it was.

And so, this stigma or expectation is what Pokemon fans are patiently waiting for over a year. They blindly believe that Game Freak could somehow make the next Pokemon games to be on the par or even better than; Mario Odyssey, Splatoon 2 and Zelda Breath of the Wild. Or perhaps to be the best game of the year like what Zelda Breath of the Wild already achieved in 2017.

Before the official announcement, I did some research regarding the fans-made expectation of what the next Pokemon games will be.

This obviously proves how big we expect for Pokemon Sword & Shield to be. Honestly, this is not our fault, but it is coming from our observation coming from Nintendo Switch games before (Mario Odyssey, Zelda Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2, Xenoblade 2). It is a living proof changes could be a good thing instead of following on the traditional routes.

During the presentation of the Nintendo Direct, we could see the characters slowly snuck in the tall grass before being approached by wild Pikachu. This is a clear sign that wild encounter is back and yes Pokemon is back with its traditional way with no new mechanics of gameplay on how we play this game decades ago. As for the graphics, all I can say is it is the enhanced version of 3ds Pokemon.

Having ample time before the release of Pokemon Sword & Shield, all I can hope is Game Freak to listen to their fans. Pokemon games will always be in our heart and let’s hope the best to come for our beloved games. Having said that, I can’t wait to be on Team Sobble. Which Team are you on?
