Dauntless: A Free to Play Online RPG

Dauntless without a doubt is an offspring to Fortnite and Monster Hunter when they married together. Dauntless adepts similarly to the gameplay of Monster Hunter where you are in town, taking out a quest and hunt down a monster (or in Dauntless monster are known as Behemoth) with a graphic almost identical to Fortnite.

Since some might say that since this game is a copycat to other successful games, it is not worth our time to invest in it. Well, I believe it is not entirely true because this game is free to play, why not try it first and run it a little while?

Dauntless is a video game developed by Phoenix Labs and distributed by Epic Games. This game is initially launched in May 2018 and currently, it is widely available at almost all platforms; Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows.

i) How it runs?

Although this game could be considered as a newcomer, Dauntless reported running fairly good on all the gaming platform, especially on a console. Playing solo will always feel great but, there are several issues concerning having low FPS when going online which involves going for a hunt in a group of 3 to 4 people.

Whenever there is a fight going on, there will be a noticeable lag going on the screen. Playing games with this kind of genre where every second is important for this game to always perform at the highest performance at all times so that it will not ruin and spoil our experience.

Hopefully, this kind of problem could be addressed by the developer as soon as possible to come up with updates to patch it so that we could continue playing Dauntless without any problems.

ii) Gameplay

Upon starting the games, you will immediately arrive in the central hub of the city known as Ramsgate where all activities outside hunting will happen here; trading, chatting, crafting, upgrading, taking out quests and others.

You will then realize your role as a slayer; a human who is trained to hunt down Behemoths. Each time quests are taken; an airship will drop you and your entire teammates into an instanced map to slay the particular Behemoths.

Currently, there are seven types of a weapon to be chosen which affect your play style greatly. And other things that will affect your hunt are the six different element types that present; natural, blaze, frost, terra, shock, radiant and umbral. Each behemoth has one element on them and they take extra damage from the opposing element.

The actual hunting is fun too. The combat is a fast-paced where you need to dodge the attack and then carefully observe the Behemoth movement pattern to strike back when the opportunity arrives.

Finishing a quest will grant you rewards which will be useful for crafting or upgrading your equipment for your next hunt. Harvesting and mining during the hunt are somewhat necessary to gather the specific ingredients for your item’s creation or enchantment.

Dauntless used the method of character progression namely as a mastery system. This mastery screen in the menu will present a checklist of goals that you need to aim for. The rewards for completing goals will grant you experience that contributes to your overall level.

Cross-platform play

Other great features about Dauntless are its cross-platform play. Your character progression is constant on all across the platform. This will benefit us the most where we do not have to start over if we want to switch platforms. Plus, matchmaking will be a breeze since we are playing on all platform, finding players online will never be an issue.

Hunt Pass

Similar to Fortnite’s Battle Pass, Dauntless also have their own Hunt Pass. It is a way to earn seasonal rewards which all are mostly cosmetic. The pass will consist of 50 levels and two tracks; Basic (free) Track and Elite Track.

Basic Track is free to all. This track will offer rewards for each level. And the other one is Elite Track which costs 1,000 platinum to unlock which the reward will be exclusive to entice you to unlock it. And clear enough, to purchase the Elite Track, you need to purchase platinum first which you need to pay with real money.

iii) Graphic

If you used to play Fortnite, the graphic for Dauntless is not very far from it.

iv) Is it worth to play?

Given the current gameplay and play style for Dauntless, I would say you will have fun with it. The combat and the weapon variety will give you hours of a fun time in the game. Since it is a free-to-play model, you will lose nothing.

And the fresh model for this free type of game will always be welcome with an open heart. Usually, the business model like this will always be limited to shooters, MOBAs, a card game, and battle royale.

However, with the limited content with real storytelling with compelling characters, Dauntless seems to be easily forgotten. Plus, the limited quest will put you up to a grind over the same scene and repeated behemoths.

But do not lose our hope. Hopefully, with enough time given to Phoenix Labs, perhaps they can refine its presentation in the future by adding some new content to Dauntless to make it a lot more interesting to its players.
