Civilization games are all about leading your people from an early settlement to become a world power and to achieve one of several victories conditions set by you such as a military power, technology, cultural influence or spreading your religion.
Civilization franchise has it up and down when it is first released to the public in 1991. Along the journey, Firaxis Games learn a lot and they keep improving with each release of Civilization games. Civilization VI get its first released on October 2016 for PC and then until recently, Nintendo Switch gets its turn to play this game on the go.
There are a few things that make this game stand out on Switch but alas, there is still a minor issue I found while playing this game.
i) Great graphics
Although there is a debate between Civilization fans that Civilization V has better execution in terms of graphic compared to Civilization VI cartoonist looks; I beg to differ. Maybe the graphic did not appeal to everyone else, but it looked great. The overall presentation gets better when I played it on Switch. You will see fish swimming in the ocean, foxes running around the environment and even weather effects such as snow in the mountains.
ii) Run smoothly
I played this game for a few rounds and found none slow down during in the game. Despite the turns get to 700+, the game still run perfectly smooth. So far, I did not have a problem the game crashes in the middle which means good news.
Apart from this game run smoothly on Switch, another convenience that this game has is the control scheme. Yes, you will need time to be familiar with the control, but when you do, it was perfect.
iii) Can build civilization anywhere
The obvious benefit when any game gets ported into Switch is you can now play the game whenever you go. Civilization VI is not an exemption for this. Imagine having the ability to nuke other puny civilization while you are having a break, isn’t that feel awesome?
i) No online multiplayer mode
When the publisher 2K confirmed that Civilization VI for Switch will not get online multiplayer that is quite a bummer. You can still play it multiplayer but limited to local play only. Hopefully, they could bring this up but as for now, all we can do is to wait for further announcement.
ii) No Rise & Fall expansion
The $60 that you pay for this game will include;
- Vikings Scenario Pack
- Poland Civilization & Scenario Pack
- Australia Civilization & Scenario Pack
- Persia and Macedon Civilization & Scenario Pack
There is no Rise & Fall expansion on the list. This expansion adds a great addition to Civilization VI and brings many interesting mechanics to it. Hence, without the Rise & Fall, this is bad news to many others.
Firaxis Games has done a magnificent job by porting Civilization VI to Switch. While on the PC version is much superior in terms of graphics and controls, Civilization VI on Switch still has its major advantage; you get to experience the whole game by building your empire anywhere.
P/S: You can get Civilization VI for Nintendo Switch by purchasing it via Amazon.
