Playing Black Desert Online for the first time will make you wonder what is the best class to pick when you venturing your time in this game.
BDO is unlike any other MMO style game where you have the holy trinity classes; healer, tank, and damage. There is no specific class to do specific roles. Instead, the game focused on what play style suits you and having fun with it.
Of course, you could level up other classes as well but usually, most players will stick to their favorite class and call it their ‘main’ class to play. As for me, my bias will always be towards wizard and sorceress because I usually pick the character that uses magic in battle.
Without any further ado, let me list down to you all the classes that are available in Black Desert Online.
The striker is one of the classes that excel almost for every realm in BDO. He can clear PVE (player versus environment) very easily with its moves and reliable durability. While for dueling, he would be just fine on its own using his combos to pummel his foes to the ground.
In Guild PVP (player versus player), the striker is always in demand because he could easily punch a knuckle sandwich to the enemy while backing out teammates with high mobility and natural magic damage resistance. Striker is also classified as a tanker class since he can able to sustain a ton of damage and survive longer in a fight.
Mystic is similar to Striker in a sense of magical resistance, fights with punches, and excels handily in combat. She offers a huge array of martial arts. It’s easy to pick her up but it’s hard to master this class. With great resilience, wide attacks, health regeneration abilities, she is an expert in PVE grinding.
While in PVP, she can do great too. Getting in and out of the middle of the fight while still hitting the enemy hard. She is a great pick if you want to withstand a sick amount of damage while still come out on top.
Musa wields a sharp Katana and Horn Bow. His Katana can cut through PVE mobs like butter. While in Node Wars, your task as Musa will be mostly flanking and scouting before carefully engaging the enemies. The horn bow offers him utility and adaptability for him but it can’t compete with the Ranger or Archer.
He could employ a huge array of dashes and come close to the enemy in an instant. By managing his resource, it’s possible to never stop moving and slaying making Musa a fun choice for one versus one in PVP.
Warrior is dependable and balanced. He could deal with decent damage and clean up PVE hordes in a jiff. Although you won’t be the quickest in grinding low – tier zones, but in high – tiers areas Warrior will do great.
In 1 VS 1 combat, he is decent. In Guild VS Guild, the warrior will shine as he can deal decent damage and survive in a fight. Playing Warrior in BDO is not the same as other MMORPG and you will be surprised playing this class. Overall, he is easy to pick up and easy to play.
Valkyrie is a female counterpart for the warrior. She is durable and powerful and will be able to farm PVE mobs with ease making it rather decent for grinding.
Valkyrie focuses on tanking while providing buff and heals and still dealing good damage. Her movement is somewhat clunky but her beefiness making her shine in top – tier PVE areas.
In PVP, you will need to master all of her skills and dig deep into her mechanics for her to be efficient. But once you fully grasp her skills, she is frightening and forces to be reckoned with.
Berserker is one of the unique classes in BDO and is known for its unique aesthetics and fun fighting style. He has an immense health pool, decent in PvE, and capable of inflicting Crowd Control (CC) chains in PVP.
Berserker is easy to be found in Guild VS Guild battlefields where he can grab enemies to secure an easy kill. While in Node Wars, Berserker is also high in demand. The skill cap for Berserker is also in the middle ranged making him an easier choice for a new player.
Maehwa is an elegant and classy addition to the BDO class collection. She is mobile, hard to pin down, and most versatile.
In PVE, she can grind super fast thanks to his skills. All her playstyle is very fun to play with balanced mechanics making her a great character to invest.
While in PVP, her mobility will keep her to survive, and very hard to CC. Since Maehwa is one of the highest damage in the game, you will need to isolate your enemies first before having the right opening to engage them.
A master of PVE, wizard able to wash away hordes of mobs with his spells in no time at all. Along with PVE mobs, the wizard is also a titan on the Guild VS Guild battlefield. Despite all this power, his ability to fight in duels and small scale PVP is negligible as he’s very vulnerable.
Wizard is more offensive than the Witch since he can get inside the heat of the battle to unleash his devastating AOE spells, then get out as quickly as possible! His presence on large scale PVP is essential, offering huge burst damage, as well as strong supporting abilities.
The Wizard’s long casting times make for strategic gameplay and surely MMO fans will certainly appreciate it. You won’t have any issues grinding low or high tier areas, but you should be extra careful about enemies since if you’re caught by surprise in a 1VS1, you have very low chances of surviving – let alone dealing damage.
With potent PVE and Guild VS Guild value, she’s often sought after for help grinding or clashing with enemy guilds in Node Wars. With powerful Crowd Control and high Damage output, she’s capable of wiping out scores of under level players and hordes of unsuspecting PVE monsters. Similar to the Wizard, she’s not a good choice if you love dueling and requires a high skill level to shine.
Witch plays a lot more than traditional MMOs, compared to the other fast-paced BDO classes. Most of your abilities have large casting times, so being many steps ahead of your opponent is crucial in your rotation. You will get limited openings to strike, but landing your spells will prove devastating for your enemies.
Your Protective Ability (PA) is essential for Node War buff, and you can easily excel in large scale PVP – as long as you manage to keep out of your enemies’ focus. 1VS1 will be tougher, but also heavily reliant on your skill and game knowledge.
Definitely a great all-around class and a great suggestion for players coming from other MMORPGs, as the transition to BDO’s fast action combat will be smoother.
This duo consists of an adorable and tiny Tamer with her powerful Heilang pet. The Tamer is deceptively powerful, fantastic in small scale PVP, great in Guild VS Guild, but very fragile! She’s decent in PVE but the ability to clear mobs in a rotation can leave you wanting for more.
As you would expect, her defenses are very low, so she relies on smart positioning, dodging, and patience. With the right opening, she can unleash an endless stream of CC, and make quick work of any class that underestimated her! Don’t go into Tamer expecting an easy ride – the only one you’re getting is Heilang’s.
With a decent ability in all realms, she excels at none. This class is very gear dependent which can make getting strong a timely task. On top of a high skill level, it’s hard to place her any higher, at least until the nerfs are reversed and we’re all running in fear again!
Dark Knight is one of the most recognizable BDO classes aesthetically, and one of the most criticized as “underpowered” by players. She’s been having a rough patch in PVP for a long time now, so you might encounter many people that would advise against playing DK.
On the bright side, she still offers one of the fastest grinding experiences – as long as you have mana potions! Her main weapon revolves around strong, focused hits, while her awakening will let you destroy anything that blocks your path – from afar! The blending of melee attacks & spellcasting makes the DK a class that’s hard to get bored with.
These classes are not weak you hear me. You just need a very high level of skill to be dangerous, and yes, she does get dangerous! On top of that, she also requires a higher level of skill to use properly. In PVE she’s a powerhouse since she can clear mobs handily. In dueling and Guild VS Guild, other classes can do what she does there better.
The sorceress has been here since the beginning, and she’s attracted a ton of attention throughout the years, both for her amazing PVE grinding skills, as well as her amazing potential in PVP – which is capped by your skill to a great, great extent on this one.
Both of her weapons focus on close combat, and we’re dealing with one of the classes were swapping back and forth your pre-awakening & awakening weapons is essential. Fortunately, it’s quite easy to do so, with many skills “auto-swapping” you to the other weapon, saving precious time and making for some amazing combo & CC chains.
Even though Sorceress is far from being a tank, and her dodges seem to be limited, she’s got a great evasion/sustain potential by making efficient use of her invisibility skills and taking advantage of smart positioning.
Although proficient in PVE and viable in dueling, she isn’t truly a force that will leave an impression compared to others. With decent mobility and a strange switch to melee with her awakened weapons, she leaves a lot of feeling lacking.
Yes, you heard it right. Your Awakening weapon is a melee sword! Some might get turned down from that, but it offers true flexibility as you mostly want to keep a big distance from your opponents, and your sword can save you if get caught by them.
There’s probably no other BDO class that will require so much kiting, so if this is your preferred playstyle – you’ll have a ton of fun with Ranger! You will also be very efficient in both PVE & PVP, and smart Rangers can make a real difference in Node Wars too.
A relatively new class, the Archer is much like the Ranger. Excelling strongly in ranged combat, this class starts with it’s awakened weapon from the start. With great distance and decent power especially late game, the Archer is decent for PVE but could be better. In Duels, the Archer will find himself struggling against a lot of classes, and in Guild VS Guild, he finds a little bit of reprieve where he can sit back and lose volleys onto his enemy’s heads from afar!
Grinding with Archer is a breeze, and with smart positioning, you can undertake higher tier areas without many drawbacks. Similarly, you can make a big difference in Node Wars – as long as you stay out of the line of fire. Managing your Stamina and escaping dangerous encounters will be your main worries, as is appropriate for a bow-wielder!
The ninja is a specialist. He excels best in dueling in Black Desert Online. None can match his might in single combat. However, his ability to PVE with speed and in Guild VS Guild combat, he lacks powerfully. If you plan on dueling whilst playing Black Desert, the Ninja will carry you through shadows to victory.
Ninja is a high-skill / high-reward class, like his female counterpart Kunoichi. The ability to use Stealth and move undetected opens up a new type of gameplay for BDO since you will pick your fights more than they pick you! Your potential rises greatly with Skill Points, Gear, and actual Skill, so Ninja’s progression is fulfilling.
Not the best choice for PVE Grinding, Ninja is the King of 1VS1 PVP. Large scale PVP will be tougher to manage, but it’s also your chance to prove who is the true leader on the battlefield!
Silent and deadly, the Kunoichi is another titan on the field of Duels. With a better ability to CC than her Ninja counterpart, she’s slightly better in PvE. Yet this doesn’t make up for the critical skills and lack of true ability to shine in Guild VS Guild or PVE. Capable, but hardly noteworthy in those fields. Despite her shortcomings, the Kunoichi is still a deadly and terrifying opponent in the Arena.
Kunoichi is tough to master class. It’s also the only class, along with Ninja, that uses 2 different sub-weapons, Kunai or Shuriken – even though Kunai arguably complements her skill choices far more.
What she lacks in PVE and grinding speed, she makes up for in 1VS1 situations, so PVP enthusiasts will get more out of her. Swapping your weapons back and forth is crucial to be efficient, and there are always things you could do better in a fight. If you’re up to the challenge, give her a try!
A unique class. She’s the only fighter in the game that can glide. With decent PVE clearing ability and top tier mobility, she’s great for agile play. However, due to very low accuracy compared to other classes and a fragile health pool she can easily be melted in a 1VS1 scenario or succumb to overwhelming AOE in Guild VS Guild.
Both her main and awakening weapons focus on close-quarters combat, but she does have a lot of ways to initiate a fight from afar – usually resulting in a beneficial positioning for Lahn. Her combos are fluent, and both weapons will have you feel like you’re dancing with your enemies!
Guardian is a Norn-like beast, that crushes enemies in both PVP and PVP with ease! A great option for new players, since she has some of the easiest to execute combos in BDO, with massive damage output, and great mobility.
You won’t have trouble participating in any game mode as a Guardian, since your strength can easily match every opponent – once you grasp its mechanics. The big downside is that your power can easily be predicted by skilled players, therefore you might have a hard time contesting some spots.
Shais are quite special in many ways, so if you wanted to avoid creating a loli class, it’ll be hard to! Starting, it’s worth mentioning that she’s the only class that employs any kind of life skill advantages, with 10% extra Gathering / Alchemy XP, as well as a huge Weight Limit gain per level.
On the other hand, even though PVE grinding with Shai is quite fun. She really can’t do any PVP damage, and her skill choices are mostly restricted to heals and buffs. This makes her essential however in large scale PVP, as she can provide huge support to her group, and it’s impossible to kill her.
Hashashin is a fast-paced assassin, that feels like a more offensive – and less strategic – version of Ninja, as well as a unique take on the Sorceress class. He reminds of the ‘Rogue’ archetype from other MMOs, but what he lacks in stealth, he makes up with his mobility and surprise attacks.
You employ a good arsenal of skills for clearing through PVE waves fast and can be more than standing your ground. In Node Wars you will have a flanking position though, so knowing how to play around the enemy classes will be crucial to your success.
